Clock Building – Edificio del Reloj: An Icon of Valencia’s Port Area

History, Architecture, and Present of a Symbolic Monument

One of the emblematic buildings of Valencia’s port area is certainly the Clock Building, also known as Edificio del Reloj, which captures the attention of all who arrive in the maritime districts via Avenida del Puerto.

Architecture and History

The ancient maritime station, also known as the “station of travelers,” shares many architectural similarities with the French train station “Lyon de Paris.” Designed and built by the architect-engineer Federico Gómez di Membrillera, the building was inaugurated in 1916 to provide shelter from weather conditions to travelers disembarking in Valencia during the construction phase of the new port dock.

During the Civil War, the Clock Building suffered significant damage, leading to various renovations. Some interventions faithfully maintained the original style based on architectural choices from the famous “Exposición Regional” of 1909, while others diverged from the original.

Functions and Architectural Details

The ground floor of the building housed customs offices, baggage acceptance, ticket sales, and other services related to maritime travel. The first floor accommodated offices for managing port activities, while the attic was reserved for rooms for staff and porters. Outside, sculptural details can be admired depicting allegorical figures associated with commerce and maritime activities.

The Royal Staircase

The Clock Building is also famous for its “Royal Staircase,” designed to facilitate the disembarkation of travelers arriving by sea in Valencia. This staircase, once known as “escalera real,” was as wide as Avenida del Puerto and served as a monumental access point to the maritime station. However, with the inauguration of the new maritime station “Transmediterránea” in 1984, the staircase was covered.

Current Use and Function

Today, the Clock Building serves as the headquarters of the board of the Port Authority of Valencia. The ground floor hall has been used for temporary exhibitions and corporate and professional events, preserving its historical and architectural significance in Valencia’s port life.

With this overview, we hope to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the Clock Building and its role in the history and present of Valencia’s port area.
